First Sunday of Advent

Prelude Please use this as a time of quiet preparation for worship.

Organ Prelude                                                  Listen for His Coming – arranged by Mark Hayes

Welcome            Sharing of Joys, Concerns, and Announcements

God is good, all the time.  All the time, God is good.

*Call to Worship

Pastor:  If only the heavens would tear open and God would come down!
People: The mountains would shake and tremble, all earth would stand in awe!

Pastor:  People have turned their backs on God, believing that they, under their own power, can right all wrongs.

People: We have failed miserably when we depend only on ourselves.
Pastor:  Be with us, O Lord.  Tear open our hearts and pour Your love into our lives.

All:      Give us confidence in You, for You are always with us.  Amen.

*Hymn # 9 B                                       “O Come, Emmanuel”

Lighting of the First Advent Candle Irene Klosinski, Dorothy Hare, Debbie Wann and Dee Collins

Children's Sermon

Congregational Prayer of Confession

“Make it easy for us to figure out,” we cry as we seek signs of God’s presence. We want it simple.  Just tell us and we can take the proper precautions.  There are signs all around of God’s presence among us – both in that which has been created and in the newness of creation in everyday living.  We’re looking for signs of gloom and doom – but we should be looking for signs of hope and triumph.  Forgive us, merciful God, when we spend so much time looking for the scary things in life.  Focus our attention on ways in which we can be of service with whatever time we have.  Forgive us when we seek the darkness of anger and fear and turn our backs on the light of possibilities and peace.  Open our hearts once again to Your redeeming love and transforming peace, for we ask these things in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

*Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.  As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.  World without end.  Amen.  Amen.

*The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified dead, and buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

A “Church Family Conversation”

From time to time, in the experience of Orwell North, there are moments that capture meaning and a sense of our church family’s identity.  These little episodes can characterize our church family for us.  Next Sunday, we are going to have a conversation.  We will sing, and pray – and then we will talk.  We will share our stories.  Please come next Sunday.  Expect to listen, share and learn together.  No single story can capture all of the aspects of our church family, but hearing each other will lead to a rich picture of what the Orwell North Church family is all about.

Live Nativity Will Be Held on Friday, December 15th

We need volunteers to participate in the Live Nativity on Friday, December 15, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Contact Cheryl Childs to volunteer.
