Orwell North Presbyterian Church

February 18, 2018         10:00 a.m.

First Sunday in Lent

Once the prelude music begins, talk to God.

During the service, let God talk to you.

After the service, talk to each other.

Prelude:              Please use this as a time of quiet preparation for worship.

Organ Prelude Music:                                    Jesus Shall Reign – John Hatton

Welcome            Sharing of Joys, Concerns, and Announcements

God is good, all the time.  All the time, God is good.

Announcements

*Visioning Prayer: We thank You, Lord, for the gift of sight and those who have taught us to see; prophets, poets, writers, friends, family and all teachers of vision.  Thank You, too, for the gift of insight by which our spirit sees and understands Your call.  It is through our ?third eye?, the eye of our heart, that we most clearly discern Your plan for us.  May our eyes bless You this day.  Let them be opened to all possibilities and help us overcome any blindness of heart as we seek to fully appreciate the wonder of Your vision for us.  Amen.

*Call to Worship          (Mark 1)

Pastor:  John baptized Jesus in the waters of the Jordan.
People: God said: You are my Son, the Beloved.  With You I am well pleased.

Pastor:  We are washed by the waters of our baptism.
People: God says: You are my beloved children.  With you I am well pleased.

Pastor:  We gather as God’s beloved children to worship and to serve.
All:         Let us tell the good news of God’s love!

*Hymn # 291 G                                                 “O Sing a Song of Bethlehem”

Children's Sermon

Congregational Prayer of Confession (In Unison)

God of the rainbow, You made a covenant with all creatures, promising life and hope.  God of pathways, You show us how we should walk.  Yet we forget our connection with one another and think that we are the center of the Universe.  We wander from your paths of truth into paths of deceit and pride. Forgive us and lead us back into the arms of Your love.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

*Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.  As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.  World without end.  Amen.  Amen.

Anthem                                                               Christ is the Rock – Lloyd Larson

Prayer of the People and The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.  Amen.

  *Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.  Amen.

*Prayer of Dedication

*Hymn # 81 B                                                    “Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days”

Scripture Reading                                            Genesis 9:8 – 17

Gospel Reading                                                Mark 1:9 – 15

Sermon:                                              “Back to the Beginning”

*The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified dead, and buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

*Hymn # 617 G                                                 “Near to the Heart of God”

*Charge and Benediction

Postlude                                                              Majesty – Jack W. Hayford

*All who are able may stand.

*Benediction Response

Go now in peace; never be afraid,

God will go with you each hour of every day.

Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true.

Know He will guide you in all you do.

Go now in love, and show you believe.

Reach out to others so all the world can see.

God will be there watching from above.

Go now in peace, in faith, and in love.

The Meaning of the Lenten Wreath

The wreath which hangs on the cross during the Lenten Season symbolizes many aspects of this holy time.  The purple ribbon shows the color of royalty.  The people mocked Jesus and put a crown of thorns on his head.  The purple is a sign of how our true Lord and King took our pain and suffering on himself.  The dove hanging upside down is a sign of how Christ’s death turned the world upside down.  Grapes are a symbol of the communion wine, the blood of Christ.  Wheat is a symbol of the communion bread, the body of Christ.  Lilies are the Easter flowers of the Resurrection.  The wreath is a circle, showing the continuity of God’s love for us all.

Per Capita Payment Please

Every year we ask the members of the Orwell North Church Family to help us with our per capita costs.  In 2018 we are asked to pay $30.23 for each active member on our roll.  Per capita is an opportunity for all members of the Presbyterian Church to participate equally, responsibly, and interdependently by sharing the cost of co-ordination and evaluation of mission; and of performing ecclesiastical, legislative, and judicial functions, while at the same time strengthening the sense of community among all Presbyterians.
